A gold coin of the Roman emperor Anthemius (467 – 472 AD) from Črnomelj

During construction work in the centre of Črnomelj 2019, archaeologists discovered a gold coin from period Late Antiquity. This tremissis Roman emperor Anthemius was minted Rome 467–472. It has two special features: lower weight than average for tremisses, and grafitti on reverse coin. The great variety types quantities solidi is partially reflected hoard finds Italy northern Europe. In terms published coins, it can be established that there are few single coins Anthemius, among them tremisses especially rare. Investigation distribution single-coin outside inside Empire shown very monetary circulation territory presentday Slovenia second half 5th century almost ceased, small number could well indicate transition to barter system. Gold otherwise predominate circulation; they must connected, most probably, either military or provincial administration.
